Innovation in inheritance -- an interview with Gao Shuai's calligraphy art

Time 2019-11-12
China's calligraphy art is broad and profound, which embodies the infinite wisdom of the Chinese people and is a treasure in the cultural heritage of the Chinese nation. For thousands of years, the art of Chinese calligraphy has been developing in the process of inheritance and innovation. Today, we have the honor to invite Gao Shuai to introduce his views on the inheritance and innovation of calligraphy, which is also a glorious task given to every calligrapher in the new era.

Author: Hello, Gao Shuai. Welcome to discuss the inheritance and innovation of calligraphy art with us. First of all, let's talk about when you came into contact with calligraphy?

Gao Shuai: I have been in touch with calligraphy since I was a child. At that time, I liked to write everywhere with a pen. When I was ten years old, I started to learn calligraphy from the regular script of Tang Dynasty. I copied Liu Gongquan's xuanmi tower monument, Shence army monument, Yan Zhenqing's Duobao tower monument, Yan Qinli monument, Ouyang Xun's Jiucheng palace monument, Wang Xizhi's running script jihuairen holy religion preface, Lanting preface, cursive script seventeen scripts, and sun Guoting's cursive script Shupu. Later, I began to learn Xiaozhuan, specializing in Deng Shilu's Zhuan script "the story of Bai's thatched cottage" and "disciple's position" in the Qing Dynasty. I was good at Zhuan script and running script, and occasionally I also wrote regular script and calligraphy.

I: it seems that you have a lot of research in calligraphy. You are a well-known young calligrapher in Shandong Province. In fact, when it comes to culture, no matter what direction it is, we can't but mention the topic of inheritance and innovation, which is simple but profound. How do you understand inheritance and innovation?

Gao Shuai: the development of calligraphy art is based on the social practice of millions of people. When all the scholars, agriculture, industry and commerce are writing, they consciously or unintentionally reveal their aesthetic awareness to the end of the pen, one stroke more, one stroke less, one stroke coarser, a little bit more, big and small positive and oblique, thus forming a very different style and appearance. When some styles and features are in line with the spirit of the times, they will be particularly noticeable. After further processing and refining by outstanding calligraphers and the affiliation of most people, they are derived into schools and become famous calligraphers. Chinese calligraphy has great inclusiveness, seriousness and vitality. The reason for this is the alternation of tradition and innovation. Yesterday's innovation is likely to be today's tradition; today's innovation is likely to become tomorrow's tradition, so I think inheritance and innovation are not antagonistic, they have causes and consequences, they are two different forms. We must first inherit some of our predecessors, and then join our own understanding to become today's innovation. In addition, I think that the so-called innovation is not only the degree that can promote the development of the industry and society, but also the "innovation". Innovation may be a flash for you, a little progress, a small step accumulated in each stage, and a big step in the future. This is also an innovation, but it is gradual and will not cause a sudden sensation.

The author: it is true that in today's society, especially in the academic and cultural circles, we say that inheritance and innovation seem to be a pair of contradictions, as if they are either inheritance or innovation. After listening to your explanation, I believe that the readers also have new ideas. I know that you have not only held many calligraphy exhibitions, but also displayed your calligraphy works through the Internet platform. What do you want to share with us in these aspects?

Gao Shuai: I also want to exchange my experience with more calligraphy lovers. Calligraphy is our national cultural heritage. Now many foreigners also like calligraphy very much. Through the exhibition, Chinese culture can be spread out and the world can appreciate and admire it. Now the technical means are more advanced, and I also want to keep up with the trend of the times, so I will cooperate with some websites to spread my works through the network platform, and also can study calligraphy together with other contracted calligraphers, with special affinity.

I: OK, thank you for taking the precious time to share with us the essence and meaning of the calligraphy world. I hope you can have more and greater achievements in the calligraphy industry in the future and contribute to the calligraphy art. Thank you.
